Plating waste for metal finishers
F006 volume is the cost, and drag out control is the cheapest way to reduce it.
Metal finishing generates F006 wastewater treatment sludge, cyanide bearing bath solutions under F007 to F012, and spent acids carrying dissolved metals. Sludge volume drives the cost, and drag out reduction cuts sludge generation more effectively than any downstream treatment.
Source: 40 CFR 261.31Drag out is the lever
Metal carried out of the bath on the part ends up in rinse water, then in the treatment plant, then in sludge, then in a drum on a manifest. Every gram of drag out becomes F006 eventually.
Longer drain times, drip shields and counterflow rinsing cut drag out substantially and cost very little. A shop that halves its drag out roughly halves its F006 generation, and F006 is the most expensive thing it ships.
The streams and what they carry
- F006 wastewater treatment sludge, with cadmium, chromium, nickel and cyanide standards
- F007 to F012 cyanide bearing bath, stripping and quenching solutions
- Spent pickling and etching acid, D002 plus dissolved metals
- Chromic acid and chromate waste, D007
- Spent plating solutions and concentrated drag out
- Filter cake and treatment residues
Six plating processes are excluded from the F006 listing, including sulfuric acid anodizing of aluminium and zinc plating on carbon steel. A shop running only excluded processes may generate a characteristic sludge rather than a listed one, with a different and usually lower cost.
Recovery on both ends
Electrowinning and ion exchange recover metal from rinse water and extend bath life, reducing sludge at source. High temperature metals recovery reclaims nickel, chromium and cadmium from the sludge that is still generated. Both are worth pricing against straight stabilization.

Is our anodizing sludge F006?
Not if the only process is sulfuric acid anodizing of aluminium, which is one of the six exclusions. It may still be hazardous by characteristic, so a determination is still required.
Can F006 sludge be recycled?
Yes, where metal content justifies it. High temperature metals recovery is frequently cheaper than stabilization and landfill on nickel and chromium rich sludge.
How do we handle cyanide streams?
Segregated at the point of accumulation, never at pickup, and never allowed contact with acid. Cyanide plus acid liberates hydrogen cyanide gas, which is a safety problem before it is a compliance one.
