Recovering metal and extending bath life in metal finishing operations.
Plating bath contaminants can be removed and metal values recovered by electrowinning, ion exchange and evaporative recovery, extending bath life and reducing the volume of F006 sludge generated. The cheapest waste is the waste not generated.

Electrowinning
Plates dissolved metal out of drag out and rinse water onto cathodes. Well suited to copper, nickel, zinc and precious metals.
Ion exchange
Selectively removes contaminant ions, letting a bath run longer before it has to be dumped.
Evaporative recovery
Concentrates rinse water so the metal can return to the bath. Effective on closed loop rinse systems.
Diffusion dialysis
Recovers free acid from spent process solutions while rejecting dissolved metal.
Source reduction beats treatment
Drag out is the enemy. Metal carried out of the bath on the part is metal that ends up in rinse water, then in sludge, then in a drum on a manifest. Longer drain times, drip shields and counterflow rinsing cut drag out substantially and cost very little.
This is the least glamorous advice in metal finishing and it consistently returns more than any downstream treatment. A shop that halves its drag out roughly halves its F006 generation, and F006 is expensive to dispose of.
Common questions
Does recovery reduce my F006 sludge?
Materially, yes. Less metal reaching the wastewater treatment plant means less sludge generated, and sludge volume is what drives F006 disposal cost.
Is recovered metal reusable in the bath?
Often yes, particularly with electrowinning and evaporative recovery on a single metal line. Mixed metal operations are harder because selectivity becomes the constraint.
What about cyanide baths?
Cyanide bearing solutions carry F007 to F012 listings and reactivity concerns, and they must never contact acid. Recovery is possible but the handling requirements are stricter and the assessment happens before acceptance.
