Blast media disposal for shipyards
Whether it fails for lead decides the cost of an entire project.
Spent abrasive blast media from marine and structural coating removal frequently fails the toxicity characteristic for lead, carrying D008. Whether a given project generates hazardous or non hazardous media changes the disposal cost by a wide margin.

The substrate coating determines the result. Older marine and structural paint systems routinely carry lead, and blasting concentrates it into the spent media. Newer systems frequently do not.
Testing a representative sample before the work turns a major cost variable into a number you can bid against. Discovering the answer after a hundred tonnes of media is in a pile removes every option except the expensive one.
What drives the determination
- Age and type of the coating being removed
- Whether lead based primer is present in the system
- Media type and how many times it has been recycled
- Whether the media is reused, which concentrates contaminants further
- Chromate primers, which can add D007
- Substrate contamination on tank and hull interiors
Recycled media concentrates contaminants with every cycle. Media that passed on first use can fail after several, which is why periodic retesting is worth doing on a recycling programme.
Volume makes the arithmetic matter
Blast media is the dominant volume stream in most yards. At project scale, the difference between a hazardous and non hazardous determination runs to a large number, which is why the characterization is worth doing properly rather than assuming the conservative answer.

Can spent media be reused?
Many abrasives are recyclable for several cycles. Each cycle concentrates contaminants, so periodic retesting is needed rather than relying on the original determination.
What if the media fails for lead?
It is D008 and requires treatment to meet the land disposal restriction standard before land disposal, usually stabilization. That is the expensive path, and it is why testing beforehand matters.
Do you supply containers for yard work?
Roll off boxes, lined and covered as the material requires. Sizing is based on tonnage rather than volume, because media reaches weight limits well before it fills the box.
