Florida hazardous waste generator requirements
Registration, categories and the duties FDEP applies to generators.
Generators in Florida follow the federal generator categories, VSQG, SQG and LQG, as adopted into Florida Administrative Code Chapter 62-730. FDEP administers EPA identification numbers, and state specific fees and notification requirements apply on top of the federal duties.

What FDEP expects on site
Applies to SQGs and LQGs, with LQG duties broader:
- An EPA identification number obtained through the state
- Containers marked Hazardous Waste with the accumulation start date
- Weekly documented inspections of accumulation areas
- Personnel training appropriate to the generator category
- A written contingency plan and quick reference guide for LQGs
- Manifests and land disposal restriction notifications retained three years
- State fees paid on the schedule the program sets

Florida has no commercial hazardous waste landfill, so nearly all hazardous waste leaves the state for treatment
The state runs a verification program in which county programs conduct many generator inspections under contract to FDEP
Used oil is regulated under a dedicated state program with registration requirements for handlers
Common questions
How do I get an EPA ID number in Florida?
Through FDEP. The application is Form 8700-12, submitted to the state rather than to EPA in an authorized state. Allow processing time before you need to ship.
Do very small quantity generators register in Florida?
Federal rules do not require it, but authorized states often do. Confirm with the state program rather than assuming the federal position applies.
What happens if I generate more than usual one month?
Your category for that month is set by actual generation. The episodic generation provisions may let you handle a one off event without a permanent category change, provided you notify and ship within 60 days.
