Hazardous waste landfill disposal
Subtitle C landfill for treated and stabilized waste, and the treatment that has to come first.
Hazardous waste landfills operate under RCRA Subtitle C with double liners, leachate collection and groundwater monitoring. Waste must meet land disposal restriction treatment standards before it can be landfilled, which for most streams means treatment first.

Treatment before land disposal
The land disposal restrictions exist to stop untreated hazardous waste going into the ground. For most streams that means stabilization, which binds constituents into a matrix that resists leaching, and the treated waste is then tested against the standard.
This is why landfill is rarely the cheapest route despite sounding like it should be. The gate price is only part of it; the treatment to get the waste eligible is frequently the larger cost.

- Financial assurance for closure and 30 years of post closure care

Common questions
Can hazardous waste go straight to landfill?
Only if it already meets the land disposal restriction treatment standard as generated, which is uncommon. Most streams require treatment first, and the LDR notification records which situation applies.
Is landfill cheaper than incineration?
Per ton at the gate, usually. Including the treatment needed to qualify, often not. The honest comparison is total delivered cost, which is what we quote.
Where are hazardous waste landfills located?
Commercial Subtitle C landfill capacity is limited nationally. Alabama hosts one of the largest at Emelle in Sumter County, which affects routing economics across our footprint.
